UNDERSTANDING & PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS

5 Facts From the Federal Flood office:
Fact #1: Floods and flash floods happen in all 50 states.
Fact #2: Homeowners insurance Does Not Cover flood damage.
Fact #3: Just an inch of water can cause costly damage to your property.
Fact #4: Seasonal Peaks and Valleys
Fact #5: A car can easily be carried away by just two feet of floodwater.

Most people believe that flood coverage is an expected part of a home owner’s policy, but that is not the case. This can lead to confusion during and after a flood has occurred. Even the word “flood” is often misunderstood, so the definitions of what constitutes as a flood have been listed here as well. ALL flood policies are underwritten by the Federal Government through the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP). In certain circumstances, the NFIP will state that private insurers get involved. That circumstance is when the insured needs more than the maximum $250,000 in building coverage or the maximum $100,000 in property coverage.
The definition of a Flood:

A general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land area or of two or more properties (at least one of which is the policyholder's property) from one of the following:
• Overflow of inland or tidal waters
• Unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any source
• Mudflow
• Collapse or subsidence of land along the shore of a lake or similar body of water as a result of erosion or undermining caused by waves or currents of water exceeding anticipated cyclical levels that result in a flood as defined above.
